Cosying up to electro-rock terrorists MONK, comes KYŌGEN on this split tape specially commissioned for International Cassette Store Day 2019. While MONK mark the occasion by doubling down on their darkest grooves, KYŌGEN’s Kyoko Swan offers up shimmering cascades of dream-pop electronics.

Tying the two together is gobby MONK frontman and KYŌGEN knob-twiddler Dan Broomhall. Leading Swan’s ethereal melodies off into temptation, he corrupts blurred-out guitar loops with an undertow of bass tones and stuttering drum-machine snares, Swan’s vocal melodies riding through both emotive peaks and Broomhall’s melancholy micro-detail tick and bassy wub.

On their side MONK lay out a stream of serrated electro-rock rhythms, gouging out an uneasy churn of guitar and hard percussion that contort into pure electro-punk noise and punishing juggernaut grooves. A partnership made as much in heaven as it is hell, Why Do I Love You? is a question that provides an answer in cassette form only.
